ESXi 5.1 free version – limits

As was already announced vRAM limits are gone from commercial vSphere licensing packages, the same on ESXi5 free version.  But it doesn’t mean that ESXi 5 free version has not physical and functional limits.

Limitations:

  • Hard limit on physical RAM up to 32GB RAM – server will not boot if there is more RAM installed
  • Not writable API – you can’t execute PowerCLI scripts against ESXi free version
  • No clonning of VM
  • No Alarms support
  • No SNMP support

Features:

  • Number of CPU sockets are not limited
  • manageability by vSphere client
